Information and Data Management - IDM

update August 2007
Continued extensions in storage capacity, Internet availability, broadband capacity,
as well as advancements in data management systems, have made it feasible to digitize large
collections of multimedia material of the type found in cultural heritage institutions
(museums, libraries and archives) as well as public and private organizations world wide.
However, information retrieval technology still has weaknesses in making this material fully available
to the general public.
The research goals of the Information and Data Management (IDM) group
(organized formally in 2001) are focused on the development of theory,
methods and tools for the management, retrieval and presentation of multiple modal data from
multiple data collections.
Current research members at IFIM:
Brit Hele Aarskog, Assistant Professor, AKSIS, UiB
May Brit Abbedissen, IKT consultant, BDC
Tor Kristian Bjelland, Associate Professor, Høgskolen i Stord/Haugesund
Randi Karlsen, Assoc. Professor, Univ. in Tromsø
Eirik Veim, independent IKT consultant
Research in the IDM research group has been coordinated within the following
- The Context
Aware Image Management project, initialized in 2005, has received
NFR funding for the period 2006-2010. The goal of this project is to improve
the semantic relevance of image retrieval using visual queries by utilizing
image context information. There are currently 15 researchers from 4 universities
and the Norwegian Telenor company within this project, including 5 PhD candidates.
The project also provides a framework for a number of master's degree projects.
Details and links to publications and prototypes can be found on the
project Web site.
Virtual Exhibits on Demand - VED project, focuses on developing
tools required for extraction and presentation of multimedia objects from
multiple museum databases. The project has had NFR funding from 2002-2005.
A description and list of publications, theses and prototypes can be found
project Web site.
Nearly 30 persons have worked within this project including 2 PhD candidates
and 14 master degree students.
PhD thesis projects: (scheduled completion)
- "Interactivity in Context-based Image Retrieval". Christian Hartvedt (2011)
- "Expressing Visual Queries for Image Databases". Lars-Jacob Hove (2009)
- “Models for data structures to understand and present criminal
intelligence analysis”. Sonja Wilhelmsen (2008)
- "The Use and Usability of the Browsing Features of Bibliographic
Search Systems". Berit Irgens. (2010)
- "Classification: Basic Assumptions and Implications for Conceptual
Tor Kristian Bjelland. completed in October 2004 and defended in May 2005.
In addition to providing a research context for numerous masters degree students
(re. Degree project list),
the IDM group provides a research background for a set of 3 courses in data
management held at the Dept. of Information and Media Science, University of Bergen:
as well as for ICS624 Advanced Data Management, held at the Dept. of
Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
- info121 (renamed info122&123): an introduction to database management
- info221: multimedia data management
- info321: distributed multimedia database management
The Web-book, Multimedia Information Retrieval Systems
reflects work done in the IDM group. It is in use as a text book for
advanced courses in data management at the University of Bergen and
the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
